A Day in the Life of a Work Experience Student
My name is Natasha, and I’ve been part of the Leigh Duncan team since 2021.
When I was 16 years old I contacted Leigh Duncan as I was looking for weekly after-school work experience. Understandably, I was nervous about taking such an important step in shaping my future, however, Janine and Ingmar immediately made me feel welcome, and this experience has been incredibly rewarding. Today, I work as a legal assistant during university holidays and continue to enjoy my evolving role.
While still a secondary school student, my initial responsibilities involved organising paperwork and opening files – laying the groundwork for countless house sales and purchases for new clients. Now, as a legal assistant, my typical day includes drafting letters and contracts, answering phone calls, and coordinating with other solicitors’ firms to ensure a seamless process for our clients. One of the most valuable aspects of my role has been holding in-person meetings with clients. These interactions have really boosted my confidence in speaking with and reassuring clients, an essential skill in the client-focused career of a solicitor. Throughout my journey, the close-knit team at Leigh Duncan has been incredibly supportive, mentoring me and teaching me new skills that have helped me in all tasks. I truly believe our collaborative approach ensures every transaction progresses smoothly, enhancing the overall experience for our clients.
Gaining work experience at such a young age confirmed my desire to pursue a career in law. I’m now in my second year of studying Law at the University of Birmingham and remain as fascinated by the subject as ever. My ultimate goal is to become a solicitor. Working at Leigh Duncan offered me a realistic insight into the legal profession – one that is fast-paced, challenging, and immensely rewarding, with no two days ever the same. This experience turned what once felt like a distant dream into an achievable reality. This is why I think it is so important for young people to take the plunge and chase their dreams from a young age because this experience advanced my passion for law and made my goals seem more achievable instead of a far-fetched and unattainable idea.
I would totally recommend undertaking work experience at Leigh Duncan – or any solicitors’ firm – to any student interested in law. It’s an eye-opening experience that provides invaluable insights into the field. Grab the initiative and reach out to local firms – you never know where it could lead!
